Sales Tips from Global Experts to Help Your Small Business or Start-up

The growth of start-ups in the UK might be due to the ease of the internet, the cloud, bootstrapping and innovation, or simply because as more people start out on their own, and so others follow.

Running your own business doesn’t come with a manual or set of instructions though. There’s no real wrong or right way to do it. That said, it’s often easier to walk a path when you have a guide who’s walked that path before. In business there are plenty who have tried, succeeded, and failed who we can learn from.

A quick search Amazon will show you a plethora of business books and guides, and in 2019 the only real issue might be overwhelm of information.

That said, we’re huge fans of entrepreneurs and leaders who’ve made it big. We like to learn from their success and try to work out what it was (for them) that got them so far.

We’ve shared eight inspiring business quotes below. We’ll take each one, look at what they could mean for your small business, and hopefully inspire you to keep going with your mission in the world.

Running your own business or getting a start-up off the ground is exciting, challenging and, for many, a deep dive into their own personality.

It’s no surprise that in the business world there are loads of ‘self-help’ and motivational books. A lot of what makes a business great is the mindset behind it. For true success, look at yourself, your habits, your ups and your downs, and aim to improve them above all else.

It’s like putting the wrong fuel in your car. Even the best car in the world will struggle with the wrong input.

This is a great way to think if you’re struggling right now to get going. There’s no better way to get going with that start-up, new project, or product than to simply get started. We can over-think, over-plan, and in this internet-driven world – we can over-research too.

Don’t take too much time with the planning. Get started, make some decisions, and get some real-life experience under your belt for your idea.

Creating something new is a very powerful thing to do – don’t quash it.

Goal setting is a common phrase found in the business world and for good reason. As Tony quite rightly says, goals are the first step. Turning the invisible (your ideas) into the visible (customer feedback, reviews, sales and more) is a powerful process but one that needs some direction.

Set some goals for your ‘to do’s’ your deadlines, and other metrics in your business, such as sales and marketing. Goal setting is often referred to as goal getting for those who want action rather than just a nice ‘wish list’.

Let’s be honest, it is tough running a business. Getting something off the ground that is, at one time, just a thought isn’t going to be easy. It’s far easier to give in and that thought will enter your mind a lot. That’s OK, it’s normal, but it won’t help you succeed if you listen too intently.

As Thomas Edison said; “The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Just try one more time. Most successful people in the world failed 100s of times before they succeeded.

Just research the Wright Brothers, James Dyson, or author J. K. Rowling to see and hear how many times some of the most famous people in history failed before they found their success. (Clue: lots!)

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretzky

Who doesn’t love a good sports quote? Sport is much like business when you think about it. You take shots, you fall, you fail, you let the odd chance slip you by, and you’ll have to work very hard to get the top.

Wayne Gretzky was one of the all-time ice hockey greats and he (like Michael Jordan) was well-known as a top scorer and also well-documented for attributing that to success trying, trying and trying some more. Take the shot… go on!

Although your idea may well be unique or your approach a new one, there will be people who have walked the path in some way before. It makes complete sense to learn from them and when it comes to business there are many ways to do this.

Talk to a business coach, a mentor, join mastermind groups, Facebook groups, and go to networking meetings. Listen to those who have got a little further ahead than you, those who you resonate with, and those who you feel can give you some guidance.

Let’s talk about those missed chances or the times things don’t quite go to plan. Don’t go back to trying the same way. Instead go for a new angle, a new perspective, and maybe consider getting new people in to help you. Two heads really are better than one.

Famous inventors like Thomas Edison famously try 1000s of times and failed before they got that ‘lightbulb moment’. Try new ways, new thinking, and don’t forget to use different thinking, as Einstein recommended.

In business, there will be times when you find it hard and you feel like quitting. It’s not meant to be easy or everyone would be doing it! Time and time again there are examples of those who have succeeded who have endured years of failure.

Just know that in the middle of those difficulties lie some opportunities and that many of the big things you know and love in the world have often come from painful moments for the creator.

Take time in those moments to stop, find some clarity, and see what you’ve learned, and choose what you can use to take you forward.
